Last year, Moldova was declared a “safe country of origin” by the German government, amid strong protests from numerous Roma* self-advocacy and human rights organizations: another step towards completely undermining the asylum procedure for those fleeing massive discrimination and marginalization. However, people still feel compelled to use this route due to a lack of alternatives and simply try to achieve the best for themselves and their families.
Coming to Germany via the so-called regular labor migration route is extremely difficult and full of hurdles, especially for low-skilled Roma*. Informal employment sometimes appears to be the most realistic option in this context. Seasonal workers are often threatened with disenfranchisement and exploitation.
In Moldova, on the other hand, self-organizations believe that there is a lack of measures to effectively protect members of the Roma* minority from the collective and institutionally deeply rooted racism and to offer substantial prospects for building secure livelihoods locally.
With the panel, we want to ask: How can we work together to improve the concrete living conditions of Roma* against the repressive border and capitalist migration regime? Where is there room for political action that can be used or enforced? Because the people come, are here, despite all the difficulties and obstacles, with all their wishes, hopes and demands.
Our panel guests are: Avram Sarban (Hildegard-Lagrenne-Stiftung, from Moldova, Emily Barnickel (Flüchtlingsrat Berlin), Andreas Eibelshäuser (lawyer), Sergiu Lopată (BEMA) und Avram Sarban (Hildegard-Lagrenne-Stiftung, aus Moldau). Moderation: Christoph Leucht (Hildegard Lagrenne Foundation).
