Long Night of Museums: Hidden Talents Karaokee

KW Institute for Contemporary Art opens the stage for Berlin’s hidden talents. A night of warbling and singing, shining and glittering; all undiscovered and all known, all courageous and all shy singers, daredevils, stage divers and golden starlets are welcome – the stage is for everyone. Karaoke is more than just the singing of a song; it is an outlet for emotions and an outbreak from everyday life. Joining in on the fun are pop starlets Olympia Bukkakis, the “architect of eternal suffering”, and Oozing Gloop, the “world’s leading green autistic drag queen”. Together, they will guide the audience through the evening and provide support between the songs selected by the participants.
During the Long Night, the exhibitions by Luiz Roque, Pia Arke and Jimmy DeSana & Paul P. will be open until 2 am and serve as a source of inspiration for the song selection. Luiz Roque, whose work deals with pop culture, queer (bio)politics and science fiction, seduces with club hits and pop anthems. Pia Arke, with her female perspective on decolonial structures in circumpolar regions, evokes an arctic mood and induces deep and powerful ballads. The works of Jimmy DeSana & Paul P. harbor expressions of masculinity, the 1970s gay scene in New York, no-wave and punk. Something mysterious resonates in all the portraits and pictures, who are these men? In the search for them, one finds hits from rock to funk to pop and ends up with legendary song titles from a bygone era of this queer scene, whose invigorating vibrations reach into the here and now.
The entire evening is accompanied and supported by the Karaoke<3ies team. This is an established and successful format that offers an inclusive and enriching experience in arts and cultural institutions. The interactive and site-specific approach of Karaoke<3ies allows the audience to actively participate in the event and reshape public space. By singing their all-time favorite songs, participants create a collective experience and strengthen the sense of togetherness.
Queen of the Heavens and of the Earth, Empress of Despair, and Architect of Your Eternal Suffering, Olympia Bukkakis is a drag queen, choreographer, moderator, and writer living and working in Berlin. Since moving to Berlin in 2012, she has organized, curated, and moderated various queer performance nights including Get Fucked, Apocalypse Tonight and Queens Against Borders. In 2019 she completed a Masters in Solo Dance Authorship at the Inter-University Centre for Dance (HZT) in Berlin with her graduation piece Tales From a State of Shemergency. Since then, she has premiered a number of new works including, Gender Euphoria (2019), Work on Progress (2019), Under Pressures (2019), A Touch of the Other (2020), Too Much (2021), Boys Night Out (2023), and replay (2023). She is inspired by tensions and intersections between queer nightlife and contemporary dance and performance.
The world’s premier autistic, green, drag queen! Oozing Gloop is a trans-aggressive tattooist, tarot reader, and painted lady of Herculean feats who uses a variety of mark-making techniques to translate psychic topologies in her eternal struggle against this fantastically cruel world. Hyper verbal, hyper active and ready to hype you up! This lady of the night has been accused of being an oracle of end times, repeatedly; despite just being a girl wanting to go about her day. She must be seen to be believed, experienced to be understood and that is something you are absolutely invited to do.
