J.S. Bach's Art of Fugue with texts by J. Brainard

a cappella ensemble

Johann Sebastian Bach's last and important work, “The Art of Fugue”, which isBach's life, is unfortunately very rarely presented in concert. The baroque ensemble capella vitalis berlin and the narrator Elliot Posener now present this fascinating piece together with texts by the American performance artist Joe Brainard to the stage. Bach's rather abstract music, interpreted by the ensemble with historical instruments, can thus be heard in a new light: In dialog with the short fragments of memory from J. Brainard's book: “i remember”, the fugues sound as they were intended - as emotionally gripping, vital and poetic music.

---capella vitalis berlin was initiated in 2002 by the baroque violinist Almut Schlicker with the aim of keeping the music of the 17th/18th century alive and bringing the unknown back to life. The ensemble consists of renowned musicians who dedicate themselves in particular to historical performance practice on historical instruments and have come together largely through chamber music. The ensemble is a well-known guest at festivals in London, Spain, Denmark, Norway and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

Joe Brainard was an American artist and author who belongs to the New York School. He used numerous different media and means of expression. In particular, he broke new ground by using comics as a poetic medium in his collaborations with other New York School artists. For his book `i remember', Brainard collected almost 1500 fragments of childhood and art, history and politics, family, school and body. His book always works with the same introduction "I remember..." For Paul Auster, who wrote the foreword for "i remember", Brainard's book was a "small masterpiece".
