Forced labor in Greece

in 1943, a group of Jewish men from Thessaloniki were taken to the Karya railroad stationin central Greece. They had to carryout forced labor for the German occupation in the expansionof the trackson the Athens-Thessaloniki railroad line. The survivors of the construction project were presumably murderedat the end. This aspect of the German occupation of Greece is still largely unexplored.

On September4, 2024, the exhibition"Karya 1943. Forced Labor and the Holocaust" will open at the Documentation Center forNaziForced Labor. The exhibition is basedon previously unpublished photos that document the forced laborof Jewish menat the Karya train stationin central Greece.

The photoswere discovered by Greek historian and collector Andreas Assael at a flea marketin Munichin 2002. Since then,he has been tirelessly researching and campaigning for this storyto be clarified and not forgotten. Asthe son of a Jewish survivor from Thessaloniki, his own family history also motivates himto this commitment.
