EXOTICA – On the Brown history of European dance

Amanda Piña

Many dance artists from the non-Western world achieved great success on the European theatre stages of the early 20th century, but were soon forgotten because they did not fit into the traditional Western canon. Amanda Piña’s most recent dance work hosts the reappearance of four of those glamorous artists. Conceived as a séance, it is at once a memorial of the disregarded Brown history of European dance, a celebration of potent heritage, and an exorcism of the theatre’s colonial legacy. Abolishing the very idea of a canon, “EXOTICA” evokes the dream of an art world in which there is room for many worlds.
