Yung Gravy

There is something timeless about the music of Yung Gravy, who began his rocket-like career just seven years ago. It's this mixture of nostalgic samples, hard-hitting sounds and beats and his passion for post-modern trap.

With this mix, Yung Gravy from Rochester/Minnesota has made a real triumphal march - initially via social media, but now equally via traditional distribution channels. 7.2 million followers on TikTok (where he began his career), 2.1 million on Instagram, 5.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, who have given his tracks up to a quarter of a billion streams: These are just some of the figures that prove the 27-year-old's breathtaking success. Added to this is an astonishing work ethic: since his first single ‘Mr Clean’ in 2016, Yung Gravy has released seven EPs, five albums and a mixtape. Two of these albums alone - his solo album ‘Marvelous’ and his third collaboration with bbno$ entitled ‘Baby Gravy 3’ - have been released in the past 13 months. With these two albums in his luggage, Yung Gravy will be coming to Germany for four shows this autumn.

Matthew Raymond Hauri, Yung Gravy's real name, didn't have to aspire to a career as a successful rapper. At just 21 years old, the son of a Swiss father and an American mother already had a marketing degree from the University of Wisconsin in his pocket and, parallel to his studies, had advised many start-ups and co-founded a whole series of PR and marketing agencies. However, the rather unusual career paths of hip hop artists such as Lil Yachty and Lil Peep, who initially earned their fame exclusively through social media, encouraged the music freak, who appreciates the old soul of the 60s, the funk of the 70s and contemporary rap in equal measure, to try his hand at the rap game himself.

What happened next, however, probably surprised him himself: His first single ‘Mr Clean’, which is based on a sample of the 1954 soul evergreen ‘Mr Sandman’, became a vital hit at the speed of light - to date, the track has been listened to almost 250 million times on Spotify alone, and the song also went platinum in the USA. After the follow-up single ‘1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot’ also went platinum in the USA in no time at all, Yung Gravy announced a modest first US tour of smaller clubs. After a few weeks, almost all the concerts had to be moved to larger venues and the tour ended up being almost completely sold out.

Since then, Yung Gravy has been working non-stop on new music, for which he not only writes his own humorous lyrics, which at times almost drift into the realm of stand-up comedy, but also takes on a large part of the production of his music. He repeatedly draws on soul and funk classics from the 1950s to the 1970s, marries these samples with radical beats from the Roland 808 drum machine, which is otherwise better known from techno, and presents them in a contemporary trap sound aesthetic that gives him plenty of room for experimentation. Whether he does this alone as a solo artist - as on his previous albums ‘Sensational’ (2019), ‘Gasanova’ (2020) and ‘Marvelous’ (2022) - or in close collaboration with his good friend and colleague bbno$ (pronounced: Baby no Money), with whom he has released three parts of their joint album series ‘Baby Gravy’ to date: you are always listening to a visionary, timeless musician who enriches the current US hip-hop scene with nuances that are as individual as they are exciting.
