Berlin Secrets - rediscover the Huguenot Museum and the French Church

On Saturday, 24 August between 6 pm and 2 am, you can explore secret places in the French Cathedral with us, or see familiar places from a completely new perspective. Explore the life and work of the Protestant minorities of French Huguenots back then and Italian Waldensians today:

Visit the bell tower, take part at the guided tours in the Huguenot Museum, have a look at the pop-up exhibition "Mulberry Town" by students or the summer exhibition in the church hall "Immagina Riesi" with accompanying documentary film. Participate in the Late Night Special "The Waldensian Connection" at 11 pm, where we will solve the mystery of the connection between Huguenots, Protestants in Sicily and the Mafia.

At midnight, we'll be serving all attendees a plate of pasta! We look forward to seeing you!

Exhibition: Mulberry Tree City

Venue: Huguenot Museum Berlin in the French Cathedral

To produce silk, you need the cocoons of the silk moth and mulberry trees. Huguenots cultivated mulberry tree plantations and also brought methods and tools for processing the raw material into the country. The pop-up exhibition Mulberry City was developed by students from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Humboldt University. It shows photographic silk still lifes and genetically identical descendants of historical Berlin mulberry trees. In addition, maps and drawings document the role of mulberry trees as a global and Berlin-specific cultural transfer. A few of the in-vitro plants continue to grow in the museum...

Exhibition: Immagina Riesi - Protestant in Sicily

Venue: French Friedrichstadt Church and Sauermann-Salon in the French Cathedral

The pictures by Gustavo Alàbiso document a protestant diaconal project in Riesi in Sicily. At the time Riesi was marked by poverty, child labour and corruption. Many children in the village experienced the school as a place of hope. This project contains innovative teaching methods, a high level of inclusion and an environmentally conscious building concept. It remains an excellent example of how education and social commitment of one minority can have an impact in the majority society. "Imagine how Riesi could be like ... Immagina Riesi".

Open from 6 pm - 2 am, French Friedrichstadt Church

Film screening: 6.30 p.m. and 9.00 p.m at Sauermann-Salon in the French Cathedral

Afterwards, the photographer will tell the stories of resistance against the mafia, poverty, emigration and great hope for a better future behind his photos.
