Wind energy in the museum park

You can learn about the energy technology of the past and the future on a walk through the Museum Park of the German Museum of Technology.

  Im weitläufigen Museumspark kann man eine Holländer- und eine Bockwindmühle entdecken. Vorführungen geben Einblick in das Leben eines Müllers und in die Mühlentechnik. – Visitors can explore a smock mill and a post mill in the expansive Museum Park. Demonstrations provide a glimpse into the lives of millers and the world of mill technology.

• Die Honnef-Windrad-Nabe (um 1940) ist eines der Objekte, die sich im Museumspark zum Thema Windenergie entdecken lassen. – This Honnef windmill hub (ca. 1940) is one of the many objects related to the topic of wind energy on display in the Museum Park.

• Die Holländermühle besteht aus einem festen Fundament und einer beweglichen Kappe. Bei einer Veränderung der Windrichtung, lassen sich Kappe und Flügel zurück in den Wind drehen. – Kappe und ausladende Flügel einer Holländermühle zwischen grünen Baumwipfeln.

People have been using the energy of the wind for around 800 years: The windmills and wind turbines in the Museum Park are impressive examples of this.

Energy supply is one of the burning issues of our time, especially against the background of climate change. But the energy we use has long shaped how we work and how we get around. For example, a mill road once ran along the site of the current Museum Park, where ten windmills stood in the 1830s. The millers used the power of the wind to grind grain into meal and flour with their mills. This was then used to bake bread for the growing Berlin. Today there are two mills in the museum park: a Bockwindmühle and a Holländermühle.
