The exhibition at the Bastion Crown Prince shows the artistic variety of a Weimar reform teacher. Theo Hofschläger taught art and crafts at the Lebensgemeinschaftsschule Spandau, which was founded in 1922 – until he was banned from his profession by the National Socialists in 1933 and the school was closed. However, he continued to document his travels in diaries and watercolor paintings, portrayed himself and his family, created linoleum prints and impressive woodcarvings.
His VIEWS were decisively influenced by his years at the reform school during the upheaval of the Weimar Republic: In the pedagogical field, he learned and taught inspiring open interaction with young people. His artistic expression was characterized by the contemporary joy of experimenting with different materials and techniques.
Silvia Tauchelt, Uwe Hofschläger and Enno Hofschläger have sifted through his extensive oeuvre. Here, for the first time, they present a representative, characteristic selection of his work and provide insights into the ideas and experience of a new, free, creative form of schooling.
