Das Wintermärchen! | Shakespeare Company Berlin

The Kulturstiftung Schloss Britz and the Shakespeare Company Berlin invite you toto celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Winter's Tale! Experience William Shakespeare's comedic romance with music, masterfully performed by the Shakespeare Company Berlin.

A jealous king casts out his pregnant wife, banishes their newborn daughter and the mother collapses as if dead. Years later, father and daughter meet, the mother comes back to life, the husband repents and everyone finds each other.

In his conciliatory and substantial late work, Shakespeare impressively varies several of his great themes, rivalry and jealousy, energy and intrigue, young love and late realization, into a moving family story about delusion, aberration and reconciliation. The fairy-tale elements are realized in the production with lifelike puppets played and spoken by the actors, while the dramatic scenes are a highly emotional chamber play that shows us that jealousy and abuse of power are timeless phenomena that can only be transformed and resolved through human development. The changeable, ingeniously used stage design invites the audience on a fantasy journey and to immerse themselves in different worlds, which Shakespeare has once again artfully interwoven: The kingdoms of Sicily and Bohemia, which suddenly fall out despite years of friendship between their potentates, are symbolic of the discord in the world that can arise when just two rulers want to divide and force subsequent generations to share their hatred.

With four actors in different roles, puppetry and live music, WINTER'S TALE becomes a subtle, psychologically precise and yet spectacular production in its theatrical means.
