The exhibition shows 16 unknown photographs, which are made accessible to blind and visually impaired people through audio descriptions. It focuses on four themes relating to Bernauer Strasse, a focal point of the division of Germany: everyday life at the Berlin Wall, the expansion of the border fortifications, the border soldiers and tourism. The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial provides insights into the repressive system in the secret police remand prison in Hohenschönhausen with two additional photographs. Audio descriptions turn the photographs into talking pictures.
The photo exhibition comprises 17 identically designed stations, each 1.80 meters high and 60 cm wide. The stations are each divided into three parts: base, console and photograph. The photographs hang centrally at a height of 1.50 meters. On the console there is a tactile QR code for calling up the audio description, information sheets in large print and Braille and an indentation for placing the long cane. The audio descriptions can be accessed using your own smartphone. It is recommended that you bring your own headphones.
The traveling exhibition of the Berlin Wall Foundation was conceived together with blind and visually impaired people and expanded by the Hohenschönhausen Memorial for the current presentation.
