“Splendid Aqua” - International exhibition of Chinese watercolor art
The fascination with watercolor painting has been unbroken since its first emergence in Europe in the late 18th century. Since the art form was introduced in China, it has also enjoyed great popularity there and has developed considerably over the last century.
Gradually, a unique Chinese style was able to emerge. The international exhibition of Chinese watercolor art “Splendid Aqua”, organized by the Chinese Cultural Center Berlin and curated by the Liu Haisu Art Museum (Changzhou Art Museum), will open in Berlin on 16 October 2024 in the presence of the artists. The exhibition presents selected contemporary works by the outstanding Chinese watercolorists Li Qing, Wan Ye and Shi Qian.
The works of the participating artist, Li Qing, Director of the Liu Haisu Art Museum (Changzhou Art Museum), focus on the depiction of contrasts. The small is expressed in the large and the complexity in simplicity. Using watercolors, large-format themes are treated in a filigree manner, as it were, thereby acquiring a deeper meaning and incomparable expressiveness. The watercolor landscape paintings by Wan Ye and watercolor fan paintings by Shi Qian reveal the diversity and richness of contemporary Chinese watercolor art from different perspectives.
