Sámi collections and duodji as empowerment

The whole weekend is dedicated to Sámi collections and duódji, which can only be inadequately translated as “Sámi arts and crafts”. Representatives of Sámi museums and duódjárat will talk about their work. They will discuss the importance of museum collections and the repatriation of objects in Sápmi, where nation states still disregard Sámi land rights and mining companies or wind turbines threaten Sámi ways of life.
12 p.m.: The “Arctic War” as upheaval - the impact of the Second World War on the SámiVeli-Pekka Lehtola has published widely on Sámi history. He will reflect on the effects of the assimilation policy and the Lapland War, especially the scorched earth policy of the German Wehrmacht, on the material Sámi culture.
1 p.m.: Living as a reindeer herder in the shadow of the mine & the “green change”Helena Partapuoli is a reindeer herder, duojár, politician and Sámi activist from Leaváš, Kiruna municipality, Swedish part of Sápmi. She is actively working to protect her livelihood as mining companies are increasingly threatening her reindeer herding territory.
2 p.m.: Working as a duojár and teacher with duodji in museum collectionsAnniina Turunen is a duojár and teacher of duodji at the Sámi Education Institute in Inari. She imparts her knowledge to various age groups in order to pass on the traditional crafts of her ancestors. Museum collections are an important basis for reviving her cultural heritage.
3 p.m.: Rematriation as a museum practice Jorunn Jernsletten works as a curator at the Varanger Sámi Museum. She is also a duojár and sells her duodji through her company “Jernsletten villsau og duodji”. In her lecture she will talk about the role of museum duodji in the revival and rematriation at Varanger Sámen Museum.
4 p.m.: Encounter with Sámi objects in non-Sámi museumsSunna Kuoljok is a curator at the Swedish Mountain and Sámi Museum Ájtte in Jokkmokk. She will share her experiences and insights from visiting Sámi collections in non-Sámi museums and the importance of Sámi expertise for these collections.
