Special presentation on the 200th anniversary of Ridolfo Shadov's death
To mark the 200th anniversary of the sculptor Ridolfo Schadow's passing, one of the artist's ideas is being realized for the first time as part of a special presentation in the vestibule of the New Wing of Charlottenburg Palace.
Three young girls sit opposite the winged god of love, Cupid. They are absorbed in their respective occupations and don't even seem to notice his presence. Cupid ponders to whom he will present the wreath of flowers in his hand. This composition of the four marble sculptures evokes associations with the story of the "Judgement of Paris" from Greek mythology. The Trojan king's son Paris was commissioned by Zeus, the father of the gods, to decide who was the most beautiful of the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite.
Here, however, it is adolescents who are sensitively observed and whose attitudes capture everyday situations: the young "Cupid", the "Girl with Doves" ("Innocence"), the "Sandal Maker" and the "Spinner". King Frederick William III of Prussia had purchased the four sculptures created by Ridolfo Schadow in Rome. Three stood in the Royal Palace (Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin), the fourth was installed in the Berlin Palace. This presentation thus fulfills the original intention of the sculptor, who wanted all four figures to appear in relation to each other.
