Nicola Staeglich: Time Signature

Nicola Staeglich places color in an intermediate state of material presence and atmospheric radiance.

She stages the painting as a performative action with broad color settings or as a spatial installation of multi-layered transparent color strips.

“In Staeglich's paintings, broad brushstrokes condense into closed, transparent or semi-transparent areas of color, defining surface and space. The support material she has chosen, flat Plexiglas boxes or translucent foils hung next to and on top of each other, reflect the available light. This creates a luminous space in the room between the painted surface and the ground, which makes the color float.”
(Elke Keiper, Director of the Städtische Galerie Waldkraiburg, 2024)

Nicola Staeglich studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, at the Kunstakademie Mainz and at Chelsea College of Art in London. She has received numerous scholarships and has been a professor of painting/graphics at the Hochschule der bildenden Künste Essen since 2015. Her works have been presented in numerous solo exhibitions in Germany and abroad and are part of private and public collections.
