In ten episodes, the installation presents insights
into lived experiences in Berlin’s history and in its
present. The notable aspect of these films is that
we encounter Berliners in life-size. They appear
on five tall monitor panels and talk about their
own personal “Jewish Berlin” and the spaces that
define it: an artist’s atelier, the vaulted cellar
of the Jewish Hospital, a religious service in an
orthodox Jewish congregation and the foyer of the
Komische Oper Berlin. Their narratives form an arch spanning from the meeting places of intellectuals around 1800 to a contemporary family dinner table in Berlin.
The installation reveals a variety of connections
and the histories of personal relationships to
different Jewish spaces. For some of our narrators, Jewish Berlin has long been an integral part of their family biographies’. Others are Jewish and Non-Jewish Berliners with different backgrounds and places of birth. These various native tongues and life stories are representative of diversity in Berlin and of Jewish pluralism.
And so we come to questions of belonging: who
is actually a “Berliner?” What is “Jewish?” Who belongs to Berlin and who belongs to Jewish Berlin? In any case, “Jewish” certainly belongs to Berlin. Immerse yourself in these lived experiences and engage your curiosity with this symphony of diverse voices!
