In the spring of 1922, Lise Gujer (1893–1967) met the Brücke artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in the Swiss health resort town of Davos. Shortly after their first encounter, she began making large-format tapestries based on his designs, which inspired Kirchner as a ‘new way of painting’. The colourful and intricately woven textiles depict the Swiss mountains with their animals and people. Some of the tapestries are also dedicated to the theme of dance. The close collaboration between Gujer and Kirchner lasted until the latter’s suicide in June 1938. It was only 15 years later, in the early 1950s, that Gujer resumed her work at the loom, further distancing herself from Kirchner’s preliminary drawings and creating new variations on previous motifs. The exhibition features more than twenty of her tapestries, as well as many of Kirchner’s preparatory drawings.
The aim of the exhibition is to bring Gujer’s authorship to the fore and thus to acknowledge her place in the history of Expressionism. After more than twenty years, this is the first presentation dedicated to the work of this long-overlooked textile artist.
The exhibition is complemented by an educational space where weaving techniques and materials are presented. An extensive supporting programme offers different perspectives and creative approaches to the themes of the exhibition.
The exhibition and its accompanying publication have been produced in close collaboration with the Grisons Museum of Fine Arts Chur.
