Mellin's paintings and drawings in "Biodiversity and Betadiversity" emphasise what she has made her life's work: the fight for environmental justice and the preservation and sustainable development of diverse ecosystems.

"Haley Mellin: Biodiversity and Betadiversity" is part of Gallery Weekend Berlin 2024.

Combining gestural vigour with rich detail, the works on view at Dittrich & Schlechtriem by artist and environmental activist Haley Mellin (b. Northern California, works in New York) focus on a series of painted and drawn observations of landscapes whose ecosystems she seeks to protect. Working mostly on location to draw inspiration from nature, and in the non-toxic mediums of gouache and charcoal, Mellin's resulting paintings seek to dialogue with ideas of "heritage" and "permanence", depicting preserved ecosystems through the various conceptual prisms of the gallery/institution. Mellin's practice suggests that, just as one can be deeply moved by a Goya centuries later, future generations will bear witness to and learn from natural ecosystems whose presence continues in dedications of protected areas and subsequently in paintings and drawings.
