In her second collaboration with the Peter Janssen Collection, Sylwia Makris depicts the seven virtues of Bushidō (武士道, literally "Way of the Warrior") in fourteen powerfully impressive scenes on large-scale canvases. Famous historical incidents and legends form the starting point for a critical examination of the samurai code of conduct and invite viewers to reflect on the often blurred boundaries between myth and reality.
The Bushidō code of conduct consists of guiding principles that have been passed down orally for generations, whose influence extends into contemporary Japanese culture and philosophy. At its core are loyalty and honor. Seven female and seven male figures each embody the virtues of Bushido in meticulously staged photographic compositions with painterly undertones. In her work, Sylwia Markis challenges the idealized notion of Bushidō by playing with traditional notions of Japanese warriorism and raising a pictorial tension, of pride and humility, strength and sensuality, attack and retreat, and power and powerlessness.
Sylwia Makri's artistic practice is characterized by extensive digital image processing as well as meticulous treatment of the printed canvases with varnishes, color pigments and waxes, which gives her works an impressive materiality. This artful design indicates echoes of the extraordinary craftsmanship of the Japanese tradition of the objects depicted.
Armor and objects from the collection Peter Janssen, give a realistic appearance to the mystical scenes. In order to recreate the photographs realistically, Sylwia Makris worked closely with the Samurai Museum Berlin. The artist was particularly enthusiastic about the possibility of assigning new wearers to the garments and artifacts from bygone times, thus breathing new life into them.
Sylwia Makris was born in 1973 in Gdynia, Poland and lives as a freelance photographer in Munich. After her education at the Gdynia Orłowo School of Art in Poland, she worked as a sculptor and eventually found her way to photography. In her works, Makris combines photography with traditional techniques from painting and sculpture.Selected solo exhibitions: Gallery of Contemporary Art, Munich; Underdog Gallery, London; Last Rites Gallery, New York; and Plenum, Gdansk.
