For 28 years, the Berlin Wall was the symbol of German division par excellence. From August 13, 1961 to November 9, 1989, it divided Berlin into East and West and enclosed the entire area of West Berlin. Both the construction and the fall of the Berlin Wall are among the outstanding events in world history that are also inextricably linked to the history of the district of Treptow-Köpenick. At 17 kilometers, the longest inner-city section of the Wall ran along Treptow's border with Neukölln and Kreuzberg. It cut through a lively residential area, dividing streets, cutting off transport links and suddenly separating neighbors, friends and families.
The exhibition “Divided Memory” shows fragments of German division history from the perspective of district history. What urban and social changes were brought about by the events of 1961 and 1989? What impact did the ever-expanding border fortifications have on life in the GDR? What perspectives and scope for action resulted from the division for people in East and West and what memories of the Berlin Wall and its fall do those who live in Treptow-Köpenick today have?
