A red silk dress for a little boy? In the 18th century, that was good manners. A portrait in Königs Wusterhausen Palace shows Frederick the Great's brother, Prince Ludwig Karl Wilhelm of Prussia (1717-1719), who died at an early age, as a one to two-year-old boy wearing a red children's dress with silver braid, trimmings and buttons. At first glance, the prince's dress with its laced corsage and long flared skirt looks like a scaled-down lady's dress. Until the late 18th century, adult fashion was the model for children's wardrobes in terms of cut and design. Not only girls but also boys wore dresses up to the age of five.

The prince's silk dress has survived to this day and will be on display for a short time at Königs Wusterhausen Palace. There you can learn more about how this princely dress was made and its fashionable features.
