Anti-fascism and international understanding were among the state-formulated cornerstones of the GDR. But racism and anti-Semitism also existed in East Germany. This was evident not least in the violence unleashed by neo-Nazis in the late 1980s and during the subsequent reunification of the two German states from 1990. The district of Lichtenberg is a striking example of this in Berlin.
The short film "There was a beginning, a middle and an end?" shows how activists and those affected dealt with this threatening climate at the time. The documentary, which was commissioned by the Lichtenberg Round Table for Political Education, will be shown publicly for the first time on November 5. Following the premiere, the protagonists involved will talk about their memories of the time in Lichtenberg and discuss their experiences with regard to German-German continuities of racism and anti-Semitism as well as in relation to the current situation.
Event with: Natalia Gorodetska (local resident, was active in Jewish youth work), Michael Mallé (former Lichtenberg register), Angelika Nguyen (filmmaker and author) and Dietmar Wolf (former activist and squatter).
The event organized by the specialist and network office Licht Blicke is sponsored by pad, präventive altersübergreifende Dienste im sozialen Bereich gGmbH and is supported by the Lichtenberg district office, the Berlin State Commission against Violence and the Berlin Lichtenberg Anti-Semitism Commissioner.Translated with DeepL
