Soviet Potsdam

Private Guided City Tour

Learn about the Soviet history of the Prussian residential city, the Potsdam Allied Conference of summer 1945, the Cold War, the Berlin Wall and the infamous Bridge of Spies.

Potsdam is a small but immensely historic city - together with Berlin it was the Prussian center of power. Not without reason it was of enormous importance to the Soviets.

Guided Tour of Red Potsdam

The tour starts at Potsdam's main train station and leads first to the Alter Markt, the historic city center. As a result of the great destruction in World War II, much has been reconstructed here - some in the historic, some in the modern exterior. On Potsdam's largest town square, a Soviet war gravesite with hundreds of graves commemorates the last battles in the spring of 1945.

A few months later, Potsdam hosted the Allied Victory Conference in the summer of 1945. The city became one of the most important Soviet bases in Germany, with countless facilities and thousands of Soviet military personnel that dominated the streetscape for almost 50 years. The tour takes you through Soviet Potsdam, to one of the Soviets' most important intelligence sites, and finally to the world-famous Bridge of Spies, one of the most famous border crossings between East and West. This is where agents were exchanged between the Soviet KGB and the American CIA during the Cold War.
