An Outernational Festival
Where do we stand in these challenging times, when personal and collective suffering overlap, dividing and polarising us? Where do we find the strength to raise our voices when a dialogue seems impossible? How can we deepen our connections with each other?
The Outernational Festival “Songs of Radical Kindness” is dedicated to feminist voices of resistance. For the first time, the exceptional singers Golnar Shahyar and Rasha Nahas will perform songs of protest and “radical kindness” together. The Iranian-Canadian musician Golnar Shahyar is known as one of the most accomplished vocal artists of contemporary and improvised music. The Palestinian artist Rasha Nahas combines different musical genres with a unique style of songwriting. Both artists explore themes of resistance in their songs, weaving together trans-traditional and contemporary music. They are accompanied by an ensemble of international soloists. A concert evening about solidarity, sisterhood and transformation.
As a prelude to this concert premiere on 1 December, Outernational presents a Listening Session with Golnar Shahyar, Rasha Nahas and electronic artist Rojin Sharafi the evening before. Afterwards, Derya Yıldırım, an icon of Turkish-European crossover, will perform Anatolian folk in a solo set using voice and bağlama. Rojin Sharafi hosts an electro-acoustic Late Night Session in the Halle of Radialsystem.
Following its premiere at Radialsystem, the interdisciplinary and trans-traditional concert project “Songs of Radical Kindness” is intended to grow modularly and become a movement that explores the relationship of music and activism, trans-traditional vocal techniques and political resistance in experimental ways. It is developed by curator and dramaturg Elisa Erkelenz in close collaboration with the participating artists.
