Shark Island – über geteilte Erinnerung zwischen Namibia und Deutschland

A collaboration between Forensic Architecture, Forensis, Nama Traditional Leaders Association and Ovaherero Traditional Authority

The film “Shark Island” by the investigative research agencies Forensic Architecture and Forensis tells the story of the first genocide of the 20th century, in which thousands of Nama and Ovaherero were murdered by the German colonial army between 1904 and 1907. Specifically, it is about a former concentration camp that is in danger of being lost as a memorial site. Not only is it buried under a tourist area, but a large-scale industrial development project with German support is also threatening to make it disappear completely as a place of remembrance. This would wipe away important traces of the divided memory that connects Germany, Namibia and the Nama and Ovaherero. The presentation of the film will be accompanied by a discussion with international guests focusing on questions of cultural heritage, recognition of crimes, the culture of remembrance and legal responsibility.
