Panel discussion

The occupation and annihilation that began with the German invasion on June 22, 1941 during the Second World War marked an unprecedented turning point for Eastern Europe. In the Soviet Union alone, the war claimed around 27 million lives. In German historical memory, however, knowledge of the "Holocaust by bullets", the mass deaths of Soviet prisoners of war and the "Burnt Villages" is still limited.

September 1, 2024 marks the 85th anniversary of the German invasion of Poland, the beginning of the Second World War. At the same time, Russia has been waging a full-scale war against Ukraine since February 24, 2022, with the aim of destroying Ukraine's existence. Against this backdrop, the event will take a look at two groups that have immigrated to Germany since the end of the Soviet Union: Russian-German (late) repatriates and Jewish quota refugees. How do they remember the Second World War, what memories were they socialized with in the Soviet Union and how do they feel addressed by the German culture of remembrance? How do they view Russia's war against Ukraine?
