Caspar David Friedrich: Morgen im Riesengebirge (Kreuz auf dem Felsen), 1810

Caspar David Friedrich: Morgen im Riesengebirge (Kreuz auf dem Felsen), 1810

To mark the Caspar David Friedrich Year 2024, the SPSG's painting conservation team examined several works by the famous Romantic artist. The results are the focus of this guided tour of the paintings exhibited in the New Pavilion.

For example, the paintings in the SPSG's possession can be linked to works by the painter in other collections via the canvases used. Underdrawings were discovered beneath the layers of paint, which clearly show how finely Caspar David Friedrich balanced the pictorial elements. Special drawing tools and working methods, characteristic color mixtures and an individual painting style reveal the artist's extraordinary skill.

The tour also includes a brief introduction to the New Pavilion, the retreat of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. Today's permanent exhibition conveys an impressive picture of the art of the first half of the 19th century - from Karl Friedrich Schinkel to Carl Blechen.Translated with DeepL
