With the construction of the Orangery Palace, King Frederick William IV continued to live out his "Italian dream" in Potsdam after two trips to Italy. Potted plants overwintered in the plant halls and guests were accommodated in the palace building. But that was not all! An impressive hall for copies of works by the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael was created in the heart of the palace. Even then, the painting room was at least partially accessible as a museum, as the king wanted to share his love of Raphael's art with everyone.
