Our 2.5 hour city tour takes you into a largely unknown history: Large parts of the city of Potsdam were restricted areas - no Potsdamer had access.First, for the Potsdam Conference in the summer of 1945, Cecilienhof Palace and the surrounding park "Neuer Garten" were closed to the public. The most powerful heads of state in the world at the time came to Potsdam: Soviet head of state Josef Stalin, U.S. President Harry S. Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill laid the foundations of the postwar order here. The conference was an end point of the Second World War in Europe, but at the same time a starting point of the Cold War. Today, the palace and park are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Next to the New Garden, for almost five decades, was then Military Town No. 7 - a forbidden town. It was one of the most important intelligence sites of the Soviets during the Cold War. Among other things, the German headquarters of the KGB's military counterintelligence and a notorious remand prison were located here. On the tour you will learn more about the work and life in this Forbidden City.
Finally, you will go to Gienick Bridge, which became world famous as the Bridge of Spies. During the Cold War, agents were exchanged here between East and West, as the bridge formed the border between the GDR and the American sector in West Berlin. Until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the bridge was a strictly shielded restricted area.
