Open Lab Evening: Magic Machines made from bioplastics

Visit Material Futures

Help shape the Futurium Lab yourself! In the workshop series "Visiting material futures", you can speculate on what materials the world of tomorrow could be made of. Researchers from Matters of Activity will give you an insight into their work. Based on this, you will develop future scenarios and design prototypes, which will then be exhibited in the lab. You will be accompanied by the experienced CollActive Materials team - no previous knowledge or special skills required!

New workshop series in cooperation with the Berlin Cluster of Excellence "Matters of Activity" and CollActive Materials at Futurium.

This workshop is about deformable materials such as cellulose, bio-plastics and silicone as possible (new) materials for soft robotics or even biological machines. Soft robotics is a relatively young field of research that deals with alternative approaches to designing the machines of tomorrow. How can we build machines to make them more sensitive and adaptable? Can we use flexible, perhaps even sustainable materials instead of using more and more metal, plastic and energy?

Together with design researchers Anna Schäffner and Eva Bullermann, we speculate on how the machines of the future could be designed. What does your Magic Machine look like?

COOPERATION

CollActive Materials is an experimental laboratory for science communication. The co-design project is an initiative of the Berlin Clusters of Excellence "Matters of Activity" (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and "Science of Intelligence" (Technische Universität Berlin), funded by the Berlin University Alliance.

The aim of the project is to develop speculative design as a new approach for the exchange of knowledge between research, society and design.

WHAT IS AN OPEN LAB EVENING?

Every Thursday it gets creative in the lab. You can learn about methods such as design thinking or future storytelling, try out 3D printers and laser cutters and take a look behind the scenes of the lab projects. There's something new every week.

WORKSHOP LEADER

Antje Nestler and Kristin Werner are science communicators at Matters of Activity and CollActive Materials. They focus on how people from research and society can enter into conversation through speculative design. Together with their colleagues Eva Bullermann and Julia Blumenthal they are organizing the workshop.

Anna Schäffner is an interaction designer and researches the relationship between humans and (new) machines at the Matters of Activity Cluster of Excellence. Her expertise will be complemented by designer Eva Bullermann, who works with cellulose as an alternative material in design.
