Open Lab Evening: Futures Prototyping

Learning to shape the future

The future begins here and now! But what does a possible future look like and how does it feel? At the open lab evening "Futures Prototyping", you will learn in a very practical way how to make images of the future tangible in the form of artifacts - as an independent method or as a supplement to a futures thinking process. You will be supported by methods of speculative design and futures research.

In small groups, you will try out the methods, design creative artifacts and thus make futures tangible for you and others. Each artifact shows us a section of a possible future and uncovers needs, wishes and challenges that are still unresolved today.

In terms of content, we will be looking at the role of raw materials in our future. We deal with raw materials every day in our everyday lives: We build our houses from them, power cars and machines with their energy, bake our bread with them and use them for our smartphones and computers. It's hard to imagine a world without raw materials. But we are facing major challenges: Our demand for raw materials is constantly increasing, extraction is damaging nature and the environment and many people are suffering from the extraction and unequal distribution of raw materials. And in the future?

In this workshop, we will be looking at Future Living:

-> How will we build and live in the future?

-> What raw materials will we use and under what conditions will they be extracted and where?

-> How do we deal creatively with existing buildings and infrastructure?

-> How will shared spaces be used multifunctionally?

The event is part of the workshop series "Learning to shape futures", which takes place once a month as part of the Open Lab Evening. In a total of four modules, you will learn well-founded methods for shaping the future, which you can put together to create your own individual future method kit.

What is an Open Lab evening?

The Lab gets creative every Thursday. You will get to know methods such as design thinking or future storytelling, can try out 3D printers and laser cutters and take a look behind the scenes of the Lab projects. There's something new every week.

Workshop management

The Berlin Ideas Lab is a laboratory for transformation design. The team supports organizations in the design process of sustainable product and service innovations as well as desirable visions of the future using methods of futurology, design thinking and visual storytelling.
