New Urban Fabric: Architecture in the Passage of Time
The event “New Urban Fabric: Architecture in the Passage of Time” explores the urban and architectural transformation of Berlin in the context of "time and temporality." It focuses on the significance of transience, the constant evolution of architecture, and its adaptation to new cultural and urban needs. The historic Dahlem Research Campus, now a hub for scientific innovation, provides the perfect setting for this discussion.
The event takes Michael Wesely’s photograph Oranienburgerstrasse, Berlin (31.08.2018 – 25.09.2023) as its starting point to shed light on Berlin’s ongoing architectural transformation. Wesely is renowned for his innovative long-exposure technique, which captures processes unfolding over extended periods, challenging the notion that photography is limited to freezing moments in time. Over several years, Wesely has documented Berlin's urban transformation, illustrating how concepts of time and transience manifest in architecture.
This exploration of change is enriched by the expertise of Kirsty Bell, author of The Undercurrents: A Story of Berlin. Bell delves into the historical and cultural processes that have profoundly shaped Berlin’s urban development, deepening the understanding of how time and change influence the cityscape.
The event will be moderated by Sorana Rădulescu, whose expertise in architecture, urban planning, and inter-disciplinary discussions brings valuable direction to the conversation. She will guide the dialogue around the core themes of “time and transformation” fostering an exchange between experts and the audience.
Following the event, a get-together will take place on the Dahlem Research Campus, providing an opportunity for further conversation and networking. The event will be held in German. Participation is free of charge, but registration is requested due to limited capacity.
