Nazi war of extermination - an avoidable catastrophe?

On the 85th anniversary of the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939, we take a look at the historical turning points that led to the war of extermination in short guided tours through the exhibition "Roads not Taken". At which turning points in German history were there alternative possibilities that could have prevented the rise of Hitler and the National Socialists' policy of conquest? What impact would an earlier intervention by European powers in 1936 or the success of the assassination attempt of 20 July 1944 have had?
