The great ideas of the Enlightenment - freedom, equality, justice - still characterise our thinking today. But who was allowed to participate in these visions and who was excluded? On a tour of the exhibition ‘What is Enlightenment? Questions for the 18th century’, you will not only discover the ideas of the great thinkers, but also the voices of those who were marginalised at the time - women, people with disabilities, colonised and enslaved people. Using writings, pamphlets and other selected exhibits, we trace their struggles for participation, recognition and self-determination.
A special focus of this dialogue-based tour is on inclusive practice: the inclusive offers accompanying the exhibition are presented, including formats that were developed in collaboration with inclusive schools. The tour picks up on current debates about participation in museums and provides an insight into the challenges and opportunities associated with inclusive cultural and historical education.
