Multiple exposures: sensing mixed reality as a performative tool on stage

Since 2021, Kiel & Meppelink have been developing the prototype software VIRTUAL BLACKBOX, which makes it possible to operate and exchange digital stage sets, avatars and effects in a live theater situation, to interact with them live and flexibly on stage, to load 3D models “on-the-fly” during the ongoing process or to adjust the lighting. Thanks to the funding for digital development in the cultural sector, VIRTUAL STAGE is now entering the final programming phase under the name VIRTUAL BLACKBOX 2024.

As part of the workshop VIRTUAL STAGE – THE WORKSHOP, artists from all disciplines with and without previous digital knowledge are invited to a workshop at Ballhaus Ost in Berlin. The aim of the workshop is to further develop this prototype, adapt it to the needs of the art scene and make it available as open source for artists with and without specific programming knowledge.

In a discourse program at the SYMPOSIUM, artistic-digital work by renowned artists such as Lundahl & Seitl and Paula Strunden will be presented in order to address current discourses and questions on art and digitality in addition to artistic-technical experiments.
