This fun, in-depth 7 day workshop that takes place over seven weeks covers the basics of glass casting from beginning to end (see below for full schedule). It will enable you to cast simple forms in glass on your own. All of our forms for this class will be cast in clear glass so the focus becomes on understanding the process. We will begin by working with wax and end with cutting and finishing your glass into the final form. Classes are on Fridays from 10:00 to 14:00.
This class will specifically cover:
Working with wax, investing your wax into a mold, steaming your wax out, choosing, cutting, and measuring your glass, setting up a kiln, firing the kiln from ramping up to annealing, programming a kiln, devesting molds, and finally, cold working!
At the end of this course, you will have all the skills necessary to be able to begin a journey of glass casting on your own.
You will want to bring your own notebook for sketching and talking through ideas and a place for important handouts. Wear clothes you do not care about because we will make a mess of them in the beginning. Be on time and be ready to work. Prepare to take notes because it's no surprise what kind of technical information the brain will forget in a month’s time. There are no makeup classes or cancelations. If you know you will miss a class, have a classmate take really good notes for you.
This unique class is limited to 4 participants only, giving the feeling of a private lesson. There is a size limit of no more than 8cm in any direction. The limit is due to the fact that the thicker the glass, the longer it needs to cool in the kiln. And since this course is meant to teach the principles of casting, we need to limit the size to be able to cast on a 5-day schedule.
