History workshop for school classes in grades 11-13 "Wolf Biermann. A poet and songwriter in Germany"

Who is Wolf Biermann? What was his life like as an artist in a divided Germany? What is the connection between his music and politics? Using key moments in Wolf Biermann's life as examples, participants in the history workshop will learn more about cultural, political and social developments in the GDR and West Germany. The focus is on the scope and limitations of art and its interplay with political movements in the GDR and the Federal Republic. The history workshop offers different didactic formats and was developed with curriculum reference to the subjects of history, social sciences, political science and art for Berlin and Brandenburg.

After an introduction, the participants work in small groups on selected objects, which they use to address the questions posed by the exhibition. This independent work forms the basis for a concluding discussion on the tense relationship between art, society and politics in the GDR and the Federal Republic.
