Historical tour of Sophiensæle with Jens Hillje (Artistic co-director Sophiensæle) and Elias Capelle (Dramaturgy)

Since its construction as a craftsmen’s association house at the beginning of the 20th century, Sophiensæle can look back on an eventful and varied past. Originally conceived as a place for the political and cultural exchange of the Berlin Craftsmen’s Association (founded in 1844), the building quickly developed into a central meeting place for the workers’ movement, with great personalities such as Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht, Erich Mühsam and Clara Zetkin giving political speeches here. After this politically progressive time, the rooms were exploited for forced labor under National Socialism.

We would like to invite you to get to know this moving history of Sophiensæle and to reflect with us on culture(s) of remembrance and solidarity-based artistic and political practice in this building, which has been used as a venue for the independent performing arts since 1996.
