Helmut Schmidt Lecture 2024 "For a Just Democracy!"

On November 21, the Lord Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, will speak at the Museum for Communication in Berlin on the topic “For a Just Democracy!” at the invitation of the Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation (BKHS).

As mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu has ushered in a new era in Turkish politics that is committed to democracy, transparency and inclusivity. In the local elections in spring, his party won a majority against President Erdoğan's AKP, and hopes for political change in the country rest on him. On November 21, he will be speaking at the Museum of Communication in Berlin at the invitation of the Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation (BKHS) on the topic of “For a Just Democracy!”.

Ekrem İmamoğlu has been mayor of Turkey's largest city for five years and was confirmed in office by a clear majority in March 2024. As the candidate of the social democratic CHP, he ran for the office of mayor for the first time in 2019 and surprisingly won by a narrow majority against the AKP. A re-run of the elections forced by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confirmed him and made him one of the most influential politicians in Turkey in recent years. Since his re-election this spring, he has been the beacon of hope for political change.

The German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation has invited İmamoğlu to this year's Helmut Schmidt Lecture under the motto “For a Just Democracy!” to shed light on important aspects of defensible democracies. The focus is on the question of what criteria for success make a functioning democracy and how it can be strengthened.

Access to the atrium of the museum is barrier-free. A ramp leads to the main entrance. All levels can be reached via an elevator. There are disabled toilets.
