German colonial history in film and television

Lecture with film screening & discussion

When it comes to dealing with German history in film and television, German colonial history is not prominently represented. However, alongside a number of films produced during the colonial era and shown in Germany, there have been repeated attempts to depict colonial history in film and television.

In his lecture, film historian Dr. Wolfgang Fuhrmann will look at examples of depictions of German colonial history from its beginnings to the present day. He also invites the audience to discuss the question of which images, stories and narratives are needed to critically scrutinize German colonialism audiovisually.

The film screening and discussion will take place on Wednesday, November 27 at 6.30 pm. It is an accompanying event to the special exhibition "Remembering in Lichtenberg" and will begin with an introduction by historian and curator Thomas Irmer.

The event is funded by the program of the state of Berlin for cultural infrastructure preservation and development in the districts (Bezirkskulturfonds).
