To open this 4-day focus, the sociologist Eva Illouz and the journalist Yassin Musharbash have been invited to present two lectures analysing the debates that have followed 7 October in Germany and internationally. Saba-Nur Cheema will then initiate a conversation with them both: what determines our view of the conflict? Why is it debated in such an uncompromising manner? And what does it need now?

Eva Illouz is Professor of Sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris. She researches and teaches on emotions, capitalism, culture and communication. In 2015, she published a book of essays on Israel and is currently a much-heeded voice in the public discourse on Israel and the Gaza war.
Yassin Musharbash is a journalist and author. He is of German and Jordanian descent. He started working as a journalist while studying Arabic Literature and Political Sciences, writing for the taz and Jordan Times. He has been concerned with the topics of terrorism, internal security and radical change in the Arab world for many years. He has been an investigative reporter with ZEIT and ZEIT ONLINE since 2012.
