Documentary: Barriers - A murderous invention

GDR in the 1980s. Attempts to escape to the West in cars and trucks increased. Metalworkers and state security worked hand in hand to defend against "terrorism" and prevent escapes from the GDR. In conspiratorial after-work sessions, they worked on new barrier systems, crash tests for counter-terrorism, pile-ups for emergencies. Cars crashed into the new barriers on an army testing ground, leaving a scene of destruction in their wake. The new barriers were then installed at all border crossing points from the mid-1980s.

"SCHRANKEN" tells of the motivation of those involved, of tragic escapes and survivors - and provides bizarre insights into the art of German engineering and cooperation between the secret service and the military.

The award-winning documentary filmmaker Gerd Kroske has carefully researched a bizarre detail of German-German history and thus preserved an important piece of contemporary history. Raise the curtain!
