Community Care: Politics and Practices of Rest, Touch and Identity – Shiatsu-Workshop & Conversation

Emerging Change Tanzfestival

How can we collectively develop embodied practices for a fulfilling life? How can these practices bring artists, audiences and curators closer together as a community?

A festival for and by dance artists who identify as queer, trans, Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (QTBIPoC): The Emerging Change Dance Festival will open on 21 September 2024 with a two-part event at Radialsystem. A shiatsu workshop led by Zem*u Huber and Rafia Shahnaz offers participants the chance to use the body as a starting point for perceiving touch and tuning in to the festival. The discussion that follows will focus in more depth on strategies of rest, resilience and care as activist practices for queer, trans, Black, Indigenous and PoC communities in times of crisis.

Shiatsu is a Japanese healing practice with origins in ancient Chinese philosophies that has developed over centuries. Zem*u Huber follows the tradition of Zen Shiatsu, which originated with Dr Shizuto Masunaga. With exercises inspired by Zen Shiatsu, the workshop creates a space for body awareness and attunement. This includes working with touch and pressure as well as passive movements. All partner exercises are optional. Participants are invited to make decisions that prioritise their own safety and well-being.

Following the workshop, Nara Virgens and Makisig Akin will host a conversation with somatic practitioners, dance artists, activists and writers. The focus will be on activist practices of rest, resilience and care that can empower the QTBIPoC community in times of crisis. After an exchange with guests Camille Sapara Barton, Rafia Shahnaz and Zem*u Huber, the conversation will be opened up for a dialogue with everyone present.
