“Grenze/Granica Art on the German-Polish Border after 1990”

The curators of the exhibition Vom Teilen, Burcu Dogramaci and Marta Smolińska, talk to the critic Georg Imdahl about their new book Grenze|Granica. Art on the German-Polish Border after 1990 (Cologne: Böhlau, 2024). The publication is the result of a research project on contemporary art on and around the Polish-German border. The artistic works discussed examine the historical shifts of this border from the perspective of changing political and social contexts, lost homelands, the displacement of people and new political orders. The volume explores the double figure of sharing, which is expressed in the German paraphrase "(Grenze) teilen": Separation by a common border and a shared common historical experience, viewed from two, often different perspectives. The current exhibition "Vom Teilen" at the Center for Contemporary Art in the Zitadelle Spandau is also dedicated to these themes and questions about borders and the borderland as a dynamic transitional space.
