Among other things, we will visit Checkpoint Charlie, the memorial for Peter Fechter who died during the escape, numerous remains of the Wall, still existing border guard towers, places of tunnel escapes and escape attempts and the open-air documentation site in Bernauer Straße. Learn more about the history of the Berlin Wall on this interesting bike tour on the Wall Bike Trail!
On the traces of the Cold War
The tour starts in the center of East Berlin directly at the TV Tower. In just a few minutes, you can cycle to the former sector border and thus to the place where the Eastern Bloc and NATO faced each other during the Cold War. Along the former course of the Wall we will take you to places where escapes at the Wall ended tragically and to places where they were spectacularly successful. On our bike tour we will show you remains of the Wall, watchtowers and other relics of the death strip that are no longer easy to find today. As a landmark for a reunited Germany, the Brandenburg Gate stands today, once walled in as the symbol of the divided city. At the Wall Documentation Site on Bernauer Strasse, the construction of the death strip can still be traced. Here it becomes clear how painfully the border separated families and friends. The memorial also commemorates the people who died at the Wall between 1961 and 1989.
On this bike tour you will see:
- Berlin's TV Tower - the showpiece building of the GDR leadership
- Memorial to Peter Fechter, who bled to death in agony in the death strip at the age of 18
- Checkpoint Charlie - a site of espionage and escape attempts
- Remains of the Wall - partly preserved in the original, partly renovated
- Berlin's House of Ministries - the site of Walter Ulbricht's famous saying "Nobody has the intention to build a wall".
- Potsdamer Platz - a spectacular new district where the death strip was particularly wide
- The Brandenburg Gate - a symbol of German division and reunificationGovernment quarter in the former border area with symbolic bridge between former East and West Berlin
- Humboldthafen, where Günter Litfin was the first person to be shot at the Wall
- The Kieler Eck watchtower - one of the last original watchtowers still standing
- Bernauer Straße Wall Memorial with viewing platform, window of remembrance for Wall victims and Chapel of Reconciliation
