Berlin During the Third Reich

Historical tours

This guided tour takes you to the former government quarter of the National Socialists in and around Wilhelmstraße.

See, among other things, the site of the former New Reich Chancellery, the former Reich Aviation Ministry built for Goering, and the site where the SS and Gestapo buildings stood, and where the Topography of Terror documentation is now located.Tour description

Adolf Hitler celebrated his victory in the Reichstag elections of 1933 with long torchlight marches through the Brandenburg Gate. The city tour begins at this "gate of destiny for the Germans" and leads right into the former government district of the National Socialists. After their seizure of power, they occupied the time-honored palaces and planned gigantic new buildings such as the Ministry of Propaganda or the Reich Aviation Ministry. In Wilhelmstraße, millions of murders were planned and war was waged on the whole of Europe. Gestapo and SS had their headquarters here in the Reich Security Main Office. Hitler himself had his New Reich Chancellery built nearby. At the beginning of 1945, he crawled underground in Berlin, commanded the "Battle for Berlin" from his "Führerbunker" and finally committed suicide there. We will show you what remains of the National Socialist power centers and how Berlin deals with this difficult legacy.

What you will see on this city tour:

  • Brandenburg Gate - witness to the turning points of German history
  • Memorial to the Sinti and Roma murdered under National Socialism
  • Soviet Memorial - erected after the end of the Second World War
  • Straße des 17. Juni - Hitler's planned east-west axis for the "world capital Germania
  • Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe - field of concrete stelae as a sign of German responsibility for the Holocaust
  • Site of the former Führerbunker, where Adolf Hitler, Eva Braun and the Goebbels family committed suicide
  • Wilhelmstrasse - the government quarter under the National Socialists
  • Former Goebbels Propaganda Ministry
  • Site of Hitler's former "New Reich Chancellery"
  • Former Reich Air Ministry - symbol of Nazi megalomania, 2000 offices, 7 kilometers of corridors
