Asbestos is a material that has been used for many years to protect buildings from destruction. For the Palace of the Republic, however, the mineral fibre was the first step towards demolition. The curator for science and research talks to the monument conservator and architect Bruno Torres Suñén about the use of asbestos as a building material in the GDR and the role it played in the fate of the Palace of the Republic.

Biographies

Bruno Torres Sunen studied architecture at the Universität der Künste Berlin and historical building research and monument preservation at the Technische Universität Berlin. As an architect, he is supervising the refurbishment of the façade of a listed1960s UdK building on Einsteinufer, as well as carrying out surveys for the State Monuments Office and researching the history of architecture and urban development.

Uta Kornmeier studied art history and museum studies and curated several exhibitions at the Berlin Museum of Medical History. Since 2020, she has been curator for academic events and programmes at the Humboldt Forum.
