In cooperation with the feminist electronic music festival Heroines of Sound, Volksbühne presents exciting audio-visual live sets by Valentina Magaletti & Theresa Baumgartner, Noémi Büchi and Ukrainian electronica whiz Zavoloka. Expect a multifaceted spectrum of immersive drones, straddling noise avant-garde, field recordings, experimental pop and visual media. Electronic music as symphonic maximalist mix – inspired by the embodiment of sound.

Valentina Magalotti & Theresa Baumgartner: LUCHA LIBRE

Friction loss, glitch, clash – drummer Valentina Magaletti’s compositions for drums and percussive instruments adopt a very inventive approach. On LUCHA LIBRE, she showcases the wildest variations of her versatile techniques exploring technoid sound art in dungeon sound volume, textural rhythms and the amazing potential of consonance and dissonance. Complex, non-linear time situations oscillating within a rhythmical continuum between simple structures, poly-rhythmic overlays and pure chaos, are translated into a dazzling AV show by Theresa Baumgartner in this Berlin debut.

Noémi Büchi: DOES IT STILL MATTER

Noémi Büchi’s AV set Does It Still Matter will be a German premiere, on show in Berlin for the first time. The music is an exquisite mix of textural drones and delicate yet complex rhythms. Hypnotic cluster compositions made of film music, sound sculptures, classical music fragments and jazzy patches are combined to productively clash in a symphony of sound textures.  Does It Still Matter rounds off a series of previous releases comprising Matière and Matter, all focusing on the embodiment of sound and the physicality of music. Büchi’s sound structures and aesthetic choices are exploring the idea of materiality in an increasingly liquid, fluid, immaterial world.

Zavoloka

Kateryna Zavoloka, sound and media artist, composer and performer from Ukraine, is uncompromisingly devoted to leftfield music free from genre expectations and stylistic requirements. She will present her latest tracks in an elaborate audio-visual set created by the artist herself. Experimental electronic music peppered with references to Ukrainian folk music, and club music combined with analogue instrument use are her speciality, and very accessible at that. Traditional music instruments like the kobza, a Ukrainian guitar, and spilka and kolianka flutes allude to folk songs from Ukraine to soon get lost in an imaginary distance, which adds an almost meditative touch. The focus is on forward-pushing electronic beats that are at once dynamic and lingering. Her last album Amulet was nominated for “best album of the year” in 2022 by various music magazines. Kateryna Zavoloka lives in Berlin.
