With his live film music for the silhouette film "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" Stephan v. Bothmer transports his audience to an oriental fairytale world from 1001 Arabian Nights.
With this masterpiece, the young artist Lotte Reinigers created the first full-length animated film in film history, whose graceful technique and pure beauty are still unmatched today. The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a stroke of genius: a silhouette film whose technique was copied from Chinese shadow play.
An evil magician offers the Caliph a magic horse for his birthday in exchange for his daughter. The magician manages to lure Prince Achmed onto the flying horse. This begins a long, adventurous journey for the prince, on which he has to save his sister from the power of the evil sorcerer and falls in love with the beautiful Pari Baru, who is being held captive by demons. He gets help from Aladin with his magic lamp and a good witch. [Lotte Reiniger, D 1926]
The then young artist will be honored with a stamp by Deutsche Post this year on her 125th birthday.
With his spectacular silent film concerts, Stephan Graf v. Bothmer fills theatres and concert halls on five continents. He has performed at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival and in the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, as well as in Berlin at the Admiralspalast, the Wintergarten Varieté and the Berlin Cathedral, as well as at the Rock-Pop Festival at Tempelhof Airport after Björk, Blur and the Pet Shop Boys.
Bothmer's compositions are characterized by an unbridled joy of playing and virtuosity, which combine echoes of Chopin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and electronic music in a unique way.
