November 29, 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of composer Giacomo Puccini. His death marked the end of the glittering era of Italian opera. His popularity as an artist was extraordinary, with the New York Times calling him "arguably the greatest European" in 1924. His works are still part of the repertoire of opera houses all over the world today. Italian opera had already achieved world fame with the works of Giuseppe Verdi. Many of the catchy melodies from the operas of Italian composers, including Puccini's contemporaries Ruggero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni, became real evergreens.
